This entry examines Groß-Umstadt (2024), the first of four German townscapes of that year in the collection. The group shares a medium, a date and a loose, loaded-brush handling, but each canvas has its own subject and palette. The exact street and viewpoint should be confirmed against documentation.

Composition: A Street Toward the Spire

A street opens from the lower foreground and bends gently into the middle distance, where a slim, grey-green church spire rises above the roofs against a pale sky. Two masses frame the view: a dense tree at the left, dark teal and olive, standing above a low picket fence, and a tall ochre and rose building at the right with a balcony. Between them the eye is drawn down the street, past an orange tiled roof, to the spire at the centre of the sky.

A few small figures in the middle distance give the street its scale. One is in yellow, another is a quick touch of red, and they are set against the lit paving. They are only a few strokes each, but they are enough to make the empty foreground read as a place where people walk.

Colour Scheme

The palette is built on a contrast between cool green and warm orange. The tree and its shadows are mixed from teal, olive and blue-green, while the buildings are painted in ochre, rose, pink and a vermilion orange for the main roof. The street itself is a muted sage green, lightened toward the centre with cream and pink so that the light seems to gather in the middle of the canvas.

The sky is pale blue with cream and peach clouds, and it softens the warm masses of the buildings. Small accents of red, at the figure in the middle distance and at the lower left, repeat the red of the signature and hold the lower half of the picture together.

Look at the roadway just below the centre. It is not a flat grey: strokes of pink, cream, sage and pale violet are laid in the direction of the street, and a few darker touches near the foreground suggest wet or shaded paving.

Brushwork and Technique

The paint is thick and handled with a loaded brush and, in places, a knife. The tree at the left is built from short, angled strokes of several greens that leave the canvas weave visible in the thinner passages, while the buildings at the right are painted in broader, more vertical drags of colour that follow the walls. The spire is the most carefully drawn element, a narrow dark-green form that stays crisp against the softer clouds.

Variation of touch of this kind lets each part of the scene have its own character without any change in the overall handling. The foliage is broken and active, the buildings are broad and flat, and the street is smoothed and brightened, so the eye is guided without any need for outline.

The Figures and the Street

The figures are painted in a few strokes, with a bright yellow jacket and a touch of red as the most legible notes. Nothing identifies them, and they are not the subject of the picture so much as its measure: they set the scale of the buildings and give a sense of an ordinary day in the town.

Signature and Date

The painting is signed in the lower left in red paint, followed by a small date that appears to read '24 and should be confirmed against the original. The red of the signature repeats the red accents of the roof and the figure, so that it sits comfortably within the colours of the street.

Interpretive Assessment

Groß-Umstadt is the most green and most atmospheric of the four German townscapes. It shows Tan Choh Tee using a deep, cool tree mass to set off a warm, sunlit street, and it places a single vertical, the spire, at the point where the whole composition converges.

The catalogue details and context should be completed from reliable documentation. In particular, confirm the title, the exact street and viewpoint depicted, the date, the dimensions, provenance and any known exhibition history before treating this interpretation as a final collection record.
